Five school systems across the country, with differences in location, funding and demographics, all have raised achievement notably using five common-sense steps.
1.) Develop a challenging, clear and specific curriculum.
2.) Set long-term strategic goals, and use them to drive practices in every school.
3.) Develop smart strategies to attract and retain effective teachers, support them and cultivate a collaborative working environment.
4.) Ask staff to evaluate regularly whether each approach or program is improving achievement. The key to this strategy: data.
5.) Build relationships with parents, community organizations, area businesses and others who have a stake in student success.
